SCENE 01 / STOP MOTION
Stop Motion Production
Frame-by-frame animation for your Italian production.
Stop-motion animation fakes the look of movement by shooting physical puppets or objects frame by frame, with tiny changes between shots. Italy has a deep animation heritage anchored by Cinecittà Studios in Rome and long art-school roots in Turin and Milan. That craft talent feeds commercials, music videos, feature work, and short-form art projects.
We connect you with stop-motion pros, puppet fabricators, and stage facilities across Italy. Our team sets up sound stages at Cinecittà and partner studios in Milan and Turin, plus Dragonframe-equipped capture rigs and skilled animators. We draw on the same talent pool behind shoots backed by the Italian Film Commission and the Italian Tax Credit.

Frame-by-frame craft from Milan ateliers to Cinecittà
Stop-motion in Italy draws on a craft community anchored in Milan and Turin. It also rests on a feature heritage that runs through Cinecittà and the historic animation custom of Bruno Bozzetto, Emanuele Luzzati and Manfredo Manfredi.
Our crew connects shoots with pro Italian houses. One is Studio Bozzetto in Milan, founded by Bruno Bozzetto and still busy across commercials, music videos and short-form work. We also tap Movimenti Production in Milan and Withstand Film. The puppet and set-fabrication ateliers feed Rai Ragazzi, the Cartoons on the Bay festival circuit, and Italian streaming originals for Netflix, Amazon and RaiPlay.
Puppet builders deliver armature-based characters with metal skeletons, silicone or foam bodies and replacement-face systems. Set builders construct scale environments to the standard Italy's commercial, music-video and feature sectors expect. That includes shoots for Barilla, Lavazza and Mulino Bianco, which have leaned on stop-motion craft for decades. Capture runs on Dragonframe-equipped rigs with Sony A7R V and Canon EOS R5 mirrorless bodies at 4K and above. We pair this with steady practical lighting and motorised focus control. Motion-control camera moves on Mark Roberts rigs stand ready when shots call for dollies, pans or crane motion within the frame-by-frame animation.
Production planning respects the pace of stop motion. A shoot day yields mostly one to five seconds of finished animation. So a thirty-second commercial often spans several weeks of capture plus pre-production and post. Our team backs each stage. That runs from storyboarding, character and set design and technical pre-visualisation through to fabrication. We handle animation direction on stage at Cinecittà in Rome or partner studios in Milan, Turin and Bologna. The final pass goes through Italy's top VFX houses.
Post covers rig removal, compositing, miniature work and DI grading. It runs through Frame by Frame in Rome, twice a David di Donatello VFX winner, and EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani in Milan and Rome. Square Post Production and Cinecittà Post stand ready for heavier work with live-action plates and LED-wall composites. Productions claiming the forty-per-cent global Italian Tax Credit under the Cinema Italian Plan get the MiC and Italian Film Commission forms their backers and TV networks need. This covers IAP self-rules on any branded stop-motion segments. It also covers CCNL Cinema Audiovisivo terms, with ENPALS and INAIL cover across the puppet-fabrication, animation and DI crews on the project.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What stop motion techniques do you offer in Italy?
We offer all major stop motion techniques. These include puppet animation with armature-based characters, claymation, object animation, and mixed media. Italian fabricators draw on a long craft tradition from Turin, Milan, and Rome.
Can you build puppets and sets locally?
Yes. We work with skilled Italian fabricators who build pro stop motion puppets, using metal armatures, silicone or foam bodies, and replacement faces. Sets are built to scale with the same craftsmanship behind Italy's animation and commercial sector.
What resolution can you capture?
We capture at 4K and above, using high-resolution Canon or Sony mirrorless stills cameras with Dragonframe software. This gives you broadcast-grade detail for any Italian or global delivery format.
How long does stop motion production take?
Stop motion takes time, mostly 1-5 seconds of finished animation per day based on how complex it is. A 30-second commercial might take several weeks of animation, plus pre-production and post.
Can you do motion control for stop motion?
Yes. We can add motion control rigs for camera movement, which allow smooth dollies, pans, and crane moves while keeping frame-by-frame animation. This creates dynamic shots you cannot get with static cameras.
What about post-production for stop motion?
Post-production covers rig removal, compositing, and grading at Italian houses. These include Frame by Frame in Rome and EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani, whose VFX teams hold David di Donatello awards and deliver any boost needed.
