SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER LIGHTING
Underwater Lighting
Submersible lighting for your Italian underwater production.
Underwater lighting needs special waterproof fixtures to light subjects below the surface. Italy's three seas—the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Tyrrhenian—give top clarity around the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, and Sardinia. These waters also offer dramatic shipwreck dives and rich blue grottoes. Each one needs fixtures matched to the depth and clarity of the scene.
We supply pro submersible lighting and qualified dive crews across Rome, Milan, Sardinia, Sicily, and Puglia. Our team sets up dive-rated LED and HMI fixtures, battery systems, and skilled underwater gaffers. For coastal and harbor shoots, we also handle Capitaneria sign-off.

Submersible LED and HMI rigs for Italian Marine Protected Areas
Underwater lighting in Italy pairs BigBlue, Light & Motion, and Keldan submersible LEDs with full HMI dive-rated heads. The HMI heads give daylight-balanced fill at depth for larger feature and commercial sequences. Our underwater gaffers come from the small community of dive-certified Italian sparks. They hold PADI or SSI commercial credentials and trade memberships through the Italian Society of Underwater Sciences. The team works across the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area, and the Egadi and Tremiti reserves. They also cover the clear Costa Smeralda anchorages where superyacht and tourism campaigns gather.
Reef-safe lighting rules matter here. The Marine Protected Area authorities set strict limits on heat output and how close gear can sit near the more fragile reefs around Ustica and Capraia. Our team plans the LED-only fixture footprint these zones need.
Each shoot starts with a depth and visibility survey beside the cinematographer. We size battery capacity, output, and colour against the dive table and the surface support on hand. Daylight balance makes up for the way the Mediterranean soaks up red light from the first ten metres. Some grottoes call for interior-only sourcing, such as the Grotta Azzurra at Capri or the Bue Marino caves on Sardinia. For these, we pre-rig with Keldan filtration.
Permits route through the Capitaneria di Porto and the Aree Marine Protette regional offices. The Soprintendenza also steps in where the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre overlap UNESCO sites. When you need a controlled setting, tank-stage work runs at Cinecittà and the Mediaset pools. Italian Cinema Plan tax-credit records cover the lighting day rate inside the forty per cent eligible spend.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What underwater lighting options do you offer?
We give LED and HMI submersible lights rated for many depths. They suit the clear water around the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia. LED units run cool, while HMI gives strong daylight-balanced output for larger scenes and grotto work.
How deep can you light underwater?
Our gear is rated for many depths, with many units rated to 100m or more. The right depth depends on what your shoot needs, so we pick gear to match.
Do you provide dive-qualified lighting technicians?
Yes. Our underwater lighting technicians are qualified divers who know both lighting craft and dive safety. They run the lights below the surface while keeping to proper dive protocols.
What about color temperature underwater?
Water absorbs red light fast as depth grows. We use daylight-balanced lights and can add filters to make up for it. Getting color right with proper lighting is far easier than fixing it in post.
Can you light large underwater areas?
Yes. We can set up many units for large-scale underwater lighting. This takes careful planning for power, placement, and safety, and it lets us light dramatic underwater scenes.
What Italian waters do you work in?
We work all three of Italy's seas—the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Tyrrhenian—from the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre to Sardinia, Sicily, and Puglia. For controlled scenes, our crews also light pool stages and water tanks at Cinecittà and other Rome studios.
