SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER CAMERA OPERATORS
Underwater Filming Services
Certified underwater cinematography for marine, pool, and aquatic productions across Italy.
Underwater camera operators pair pro diving certification with cinema camera skill to capture footage below the surface. In Italy, they work across the Mediterranean, from Sardinia's clear Costa Smeralda to the Amalfi Coast, Sicily's volcanic waters, and Cinecittà Studios' tank facilities in Rome. The result is striking subaquatic visuals.
We connect you with certified underwater camera pros who bring both diving experience and cinematographic skill. Our network covers operators who work at Cinecittà Studios' water facilities and along Italy's long Mediterranean coastline. Our team sets up waterproof housing, lighting, safety divers, and logistics so your underwater sequences are shot safely.

Certified underwater DPs across the Mediterranean and Cinecittà tanks
Dive shooting in Italy draws on a deep pool of PADI, CMAS, and HSE-certified dive operators. It also draws on the country's standout Mediterranean and tank setup, built up over decades of film and documentary work.
Our network runs surface and SCUBA-based DPs across Italy's prime dive waters. They work out of Sardegna's Costa Smeralda and the La Maddalena archipelago, Sicilia's Egadi and Aeolian island groups, and Capri's Grotta Azzurra with its nearby sea caves. They also cover the Cinque Terre coastal water under the Area Marina Protetta regime, the Tremiti islands off Puglia, and the Pelagos Sanctuary for cetacean filming between the Ligurian coast and Corsica.
Studio work moves into the Cinecittà tank facilities in Rome and dedicated commercial water-stage rentals in Milano. Operators carry ARRI Alexa Mini LF, RED Komodo and V-Raptor, Sony Venice 2 and FX6, and Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K bodies. These sit inside Gates, Hydroflex, and SPL housings set up with calibrated dome ports and underwater monitor downlinks to the surface director. Mediterranean superyacht shoots out of Porto Cervo and along the Amalfi Coast brief the same teams for Costa Smeralda fashion editorials, charter brand campaigns, and resort tourism content.
Each job starts with a risk assessment and a written dive plan with depth and bottom-time tables. We then review the shotlist against ARPA marine-park rules, Capitaneria di Porto permits, and Pelagos Sanctuary cetacean-filming protocols when the sequence falls inside covered waters or seasonal cetacean migration corridors. Crews include a lead underwater DP, qualified safety divers, a surface coordinator running communications and the monitor downlink, and a dive medic for hard or deep sequences. For extended depth and long-bottom-time work below recreational limits, we arrange hyperbaric chamber standby and dive-table tracking.
Trained water-safety supervisors coach non-diving talent using shallow-water rigs, breath-hold training, and surface-supplied air where the schedule allows. During pre-production, we spec underwater LED and HMI lighting packages in waterproof housings for deep, dark, or low-visibility shots in caves, wrecks, and night sequences. The same vendor track record spans Mediterranean feature sequences for Sorrentino and Garrone shoots, Sardegna and Sicilia documentary work, Costa Smeralda yacht and fashion content, and pool-based fashion and commercial shoots in Milano water-stage studios. All work follows Italian diving rules, the CCNL Cinema Audiovisivo framework, ENPALS inputs, and INAIL marine-work safety standards.
We plan each dive schedule around the conditions that govern open-water work. Mediterranean water is clearest in late spring and summer. So we book Sardinia and Sicily sequences inside that window. We track tides, swell, and current each day. When the sea turns, we build backup tank days at Cinecittà. Studio tanks let us hold turnaround steady whatever the weather. For deep work, we space dives to respect bottom-time limits.
FAQ
Professional Underwater Operations
What certifications do your underwater operators hold?
Our underwater camera operators hold pro PADI, CMAS, or equal certifications suited to the filming depth and conditions. Many also hold pro dive shooting certifications, plus HSE or equal commercial diving qualifications for hard shoots.
What camera systems can you use underwater?
We run underwater housings for ARRI Alexa Mini, RED Komodo/V-Raptor, Sony Venice/FX6, and Blackmagic cameras. The housing we choose depends on your camera package, the features you need, and the depth. We also use purpose-built underwater cinema cameras.
Can you film with actors underwater?
Yes. We work with trained water safety coordinators and coach actors for underwater work. Non-diving actors can be filmed in calm shallow water with safety divers nearby. Hard underwater stunts need extra planning and a clear safety plan.
What locations in Italy are suitable for underwater filming?
Italy offers a wide range of underwater filming spots: the Mediterranean (clear water, marine life), the Adriatic coast (dramatic conditions), lakes and rivers (freshwater settings), and many studio tanks and pools for calm, controlled shoots.
How do you handle underwater lighting?
We use purpose-built underwater LED and HMI lights in waterproof housings. For pool and tank work, light from above the surface often reaches well enough. Deep or murky water needs its own underwater lighting package, which we plan during pre-production.
What are the safety requirements for underwater filming?
All underwater work needs risk assessments, dive plans, certified safety divers, surface support, and emergency steps. We follow Italian diving rules and film industry safety standards. Hard sequences may need a hyperbaric chamber on standby.
