Tax Credit for International Productions
The Tax Credit for International Productions Italy's Tax Credit for Foreign Productions pays 40% on eligible Italian spend, and 30% for non-European above-the-line costs. You must spend at least €250K, and the cap is €20M per company each year. Since the 2025 reforms, there is no minimum number of filming days.
Eligibility and Application Process
You apply through the Ministry of Culture (MiC), and you need an Italian production services partner. The 2025 rules ask for finished work before they grant the full tax credit. Processing usually takes 6-12 months after you submit.
Regional Film Funds
Strong regional support adds to the national credits: the Lazio Film Fund, Lombardy Film Commission, Apulia Film Fund, Piedmont Film Fund, and Trentino-Alto Adige incentives. Together, this support can reach 60% of eligible costs.

Visa Requirements for Film Crews
Italy is part of the Schengen Area. US and other visa-exempt nationals can work on productions for up to 90 days. Longer shoots need a work permit, though you can request it after entry for stays under 3 months.
EU/EEA Citizens
No visa required. Freedom to work throughout Italy with valid ID or passport.
Film Crew Schengen Visa
This Type C visa covers up to 90 days. You need a letter from the production company, a crew list, and filming authorization. Apply at least 15 days before you travel.
Extended Work (90+ days)
You need a work permit, a visa, and a residence permit, and the process takes 1-3 months. You can request work authorization after entry for stays under 3 months.
