SCENE 01 / HELICOPTER FILMING
Helicopter Filming
Large-scale aerial cinematography with gyro-stabilized camera systems across Italy.
Helicopter filming gives you bold aerial views with the payload, flight time, and altitude reach that drones cannot match. In Italy, helicopters with gyro-stabilized mounts capture sweeping vistas over the Dolomites, the Italian Alps, the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Sardinia, and the rolling vineyards of Tuscany. The same flights frame historic skylines from Rome to Florence, Venice, and Naples.
We set up helicopter filming with ENAC-certified aviation operators and skilled aerial cinematographers across Italy. Our team handles ENAC flight sign-off, EASA airspace planning, plus MiC and Soprintendenze approvals for heritage sites. This safety planning lets your production capture stunning footage over the Colosseum, the Venice lagoon, or Mount Etna while meeting the highest aviation standards.

Gyro-stabilised aerials across Italy's most varied terrain
Helicopter filming in Italy gives you the payload, altitude reach, and flight time that drone work cannot match. That power is key for extended takes over the Dolomite peaks, long-range coverage of the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre, sweeping passes above Lake Como and the Tuscan vineyards, and chase sequences along the Italian Alps and Mount Etna's volcanic slopes.
We set up aircraft and pilots through ENAC and EASA-certified rotary operators that include Elilombarda, Elilario, and AirGreen. The gyro-stabilised Cineflex and Shotover Elite mounts carry ARRI Alexa, RED V-Raptor, and Sony Venice 2 cinema packages on long-range zoom glass. Our operator pool draws on Italian aerial DPs flown on Sorrentino features, Garrone's recent unit work, and the Bond second-unit shoots that have passed through the country. Aviation insurance, NOTAMs, and air-to-ground communication are managed from start to finish.
Real-time video downlink lets directors frame from the ground while pilots and aerial DPs fly precise moves overhead. The helicopter choice ranges from the agile AS350 and A109 sites for tight Dolomite work through to twin-engine Bell and AgustaWestland aircraft for long flights over the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts. Italian helicopter operators also set up the marine-grade safety gear needed for offshore flights to Capri, Ischia, the Aeolian Islands, and the Sardinian coast.
Authorisation is the single biggest factor in a smooth Italian helicopter shoot. Our team handles the ENAC flight clearances under EASA Reg.UE 2018/1139 and the EASA airspace planning across the Italian regions. We also secure the MiC and Soprintendenze approvals for shots near the Vatican, the Colosseum, and the Venice San Marco basin, plus the Italian Aero Club forms for off-limits-zone access.
Several areas carry exclusion zones, so flight paths are designed around them from the first scout. These include the autostrade corridors, the sensitive military bases near Aviano, Sigonella, and Decimomannu, and the guarded airspace above heritage sites such as Pompei, the Reggia di Caserta, and the Trulli landscape of Alberobello. Coastal weather along the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic adds further limits on planning. Our coordinators draw on the long-range forecast networks run by Italian regional air-traffic control to find the right shooting window.
Lead times usually run four to six weeks for standard flights, and longer where heritage permits or off-limits zones meet the storyboard. We handle the INAIL safety forms and ENPALS contributor planning under the CCNL Cinema Audiovisivo framework. The forty per cent Italian Tax Credit is applied to qualifying aerial-unit spend through DGCA accounting, from first scout through final audit.
FAQ
Aerial Cinematography Expertise
When should I choose helicopter over drone filming?
Helicopters suit extended aerial takes over the Dolomites and Amalfi Coast, high-speed sequences, shots that need heavy cinema cameras, and long-range coverage. They also work where drones cannot fly under ENAC rules over the Vatican, the Colosseum, Cinque Terre, or the Amalfi Coast. For quick setups and lower altitudes, drones may cost less.
What camera systems do you use for helicopter filming?
We run gyro-stabilized rigs that include Cineflex and Shotover mounts, and these carry ARRI, RED, and other cinema cameras. The rigs give rock-steady footage even during fast flight moves, and they allow remote camera control.
Can you film over cities like Rome or Venice?
Yes, with the proper sign-off. Rome has strict airspace rules around the Vatican and Colosseum, and Venice has special limits over San Marco. We can secure helicopter filming permits with advance planning through ENAC, MiC, and the relevant Soprintendenze, though large fees and long lead times apply.
What types of helicopters do you use?
We work with many helicopter types based on your needs, from smaller aircraft for tight Dolomite moves to larger helicopters for heavy camera rigs and long flights. The right aircraft depends on altitude, shot needs, and payload.
How do you handle air-to-ground coordination?
We use pro radio communications kit for live planning between the helicopter crew and ground teams, so directors can talk to pilots and camera operators. Our video downlink lets you track the aerial shots as they happen.
How far in advance should we book helicopter filming?
We suggest 4-6 weeks minimum for helicopter flights in Italy. That window allows time for ENAC sign-off, MiC heritage permits, and regional Soprintendenze approvals. Shoots over Rome, Venice, or the Amalfi Coast usually need longer lead times.
