SCENE 01 / NIGHT VISION FILMING
Night Vision Filming
Low-light and infrared cinematography for your Italian production.
Night vision filming uses special infrared and low-light cameras to capture shots where normal cameras fail. In Italy, this is key for logging shy night wildlife—Italian wolves in the Apennines, brown bears in Trentino, flamingos in Sardinian lagoons, and wild boar across rural land. It also suits dramatic dark-sky shoots in the Dolomites and across the Tuscan countryside.
We source night vision and infrared camera packages through Cinecittà Studios and rental houses in Rome and Milan. Our crews know Gran Paradiso, Abruzzo National Park, and the Amalfi Coast well. The team also works with the Italian Film Commission network and Soprintendenze regionali to win permits for filming in covered natural areas and UNESCO sites.

On Location
IR and low-light cinematography across Italy's wild zones
Night vision filming in Italy serves two clear briefs that meet on the same kit list.
The first is wildlife. The list runs from Apennine wolves (lupo) in Abruzzo, Sila and Pollino, brown bears in Trentino's Adamello Brenta, and the rare Marsican brown bears (orso) around Abruzzo National Park, to wild boar (cinghiale) across the Tuscan, Umbrian and Lazio countryside, golden jackals along the Friulian border, and flamingos in the Cagliari and Oristano lagoons of Sardinia. For all of it, Gen 3 image intensifiers, IR-modified cinema bodies and 850nm or 940nm covert IR floods let our crew work at zero lux without disturbing night species or triggering camera-shy behaviour.
The second is scripted and documentary content drawn from the Italian crime tradition. The visual grammar of Gomorra, Suburra, ZeroZeroZero and the cinema of Stefano Sollima leans on practical low-light texture: long-lens surveillance plates over the Scampia outskirts, thermal inserts on harbour and checkpoint scenes, and dark-sky exteriors over the Dolomites, the Val d'Orcia, the Murge plateau and the Sardinian interior. The country offers some of Europe's finest dark-sky cinematography locations, with many Cieli Bui certified zones.
Our crew sources packages through Cinecittà and pro rental houses in Rome and Milan. The kit includes Sony A7S III and FX6 high-ISO bodies, RED Komodo and V-Raptor, Canon ME-series specialty sensors, FLIR and Teledyne thermal cameras for radiometric and dramatic looks, and Photonis Gen 3 image intensifiers. We add 850nm and 940nm IR laser illuminators plus long-range covert floods for hide work. Permits for covered areas run through the Italian Film Commission network, MiC and regional Soprintendenze for Gran Paradiso, Stelvio, Abruzzo, Cilento e Vallo di Diano, Sila and Aspromonte National Parks.
Public-safety filming needs careful planning, from checkpoints and night patrols to harbour work and railway exteriors. Our team liaises with the carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza ahead of stage day. ENAC drone licensing covers thermal aerial cross-overs when the brief calls for it.
Post noise reduction, regrading and rig removal run through Frame by Frame in Rome (twice a David di Donatello VFX winner), EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani in Milan and Rome, Square Post Production in Milan, and Cinecittà Post. We apply the forty-per-cent global tax credit under the Cinema Italian Plan where projects qualify, along with CCNL Cinema Audiovisivo coverage plus ENPALS and INAIL provision.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What night vision technologies do you use?
We source Gen 3 image intensifiers, digital night vision, Sony a7S high-ISO cameras, and infrared-sensitive sensors through rental houses in Rome and Milan, including Cinecittà. The right gear depends on whether you film Apennine wolves or astrophotography in the Dolomites.
Can you film Italian wildlife in complete darkness?
Yes. With IR lighting we film in zero-lux conditions without disturbing night species. This matters for capturing Italian wolves, brown bears, wild boar, and flamingos across Abruzzo, Gran Paradiso, and Sardinian lagoons.
What's the difference between night vision looks?
Image intensifiers give the classic green-tint look, IR cameras produce monochrome shots, and high-ISO cameras can capture natural color in very low light. We match the tech to your creative brief.
Is IR illumination invisible to animals?
Near-infrared (850nm) is invisible to humans and most Italian wildlife, while 940nm far-infrared cannot be detected at all. Both work well for filming wolves, bears, and flamingos in Italian reserves without disturbing them.
What resolution is possible at night?
Modern systems capture 4K and beyond in very low light. Actual resolution depends on the ambient light and the gear you pick, and we advise on the best fit for your shoot.
Can you film night landscapes in Italy?
Yes. With high-ISO cameras we capture moonlit Dolomite peaks, Milky Way astrophotography over Tuscan hills, and starscapes across Sardinia. The Dolomites and Val d'Orcia offer some of Europe's finest dark-sky cinematography locations.
Related Services
Productions in Italy that need this often pair it with Thermal Imaging, Wire Cam Systems, and Gimbal Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Director of Photography Services and Time-lapse & Hyperlapse.
