SCENE 01 / LED WALL VIRTUAL

LED Wall Virtual Production

In-camera visual effects for your Italian production.

Scroll

LED wall virtual production uses large LED display volumes to project real-time rendered worlds behind your cast. This replaces the old green screen with lifelike in-camera backgrounds. Cinecittà Studios in Rome is Europe's largest at 400,000m², with 20 stages growing to 25 by 2026. The lot runs Europe's largest LED wall and Studio 22 (38,000 sq ft), backed by a €300M EU revamp and recent shoots like Mel Gibson's Resurrection of Christ and Ridley Scott's Dog Stars.

We connect you with LED wall stages and Unreal Engine teams in Rome and Milan. Post houses back the work, including Frame by Frame (two David di Donatello VFX awards), EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani, Square Post Production and Cinecittà Post. Our team also sets up stage booking, virtual art department resources and the 40% global Italian Tax Credit through MiC and Italian Film Commissions.

On Location

ICVFX volumes from Cinecittà Stage 5 to Lumiq Turin

LED wall virtual production replaces the classic green screen with a large display volume. It projects lifelike worlds behind your cast, captured straight in camera. You get true lighting, eye reflections and parallax-correct backgrounds at every focal length.

Italy now ranks among Europe's best-equipped regions for this craft. Cinecittà's LED Stage 5 in Rome is the country's largest LED volume, and it anchors the 300-million-euro EU revamp of the historic lot that is growing the studio from twenty to twenty-five stages by 2026. Inside the same complex, Studio 22 holds 38,000 square feet of ICVFX-ready space. It has hosted Ridley Scott's Dog Stars and Mel Gibson's Resurrection of Christ alongside major global episodic and feature shoots.

Lumiq Studios in Turin runs a dedicated LED volume backed by deep VFX heritage. Its service focuses on car and commercial work for the Fiat and Stellantis ecosystem. XR studios such as Brand Bigi, Pulsar Studio and Rainbow XR — the XR arm of Rainbow Group — add more Milan-side and regional capacity for commercials, music videos and branded content, with portable volumes ready for short-cycle launches.

Real-time rendering runs on Unreal Engine through partnered virtual art departments. These are staffed by Italian virtual production supervisors trained at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome and on the post-prod side at Frame by Frame, EDI and Lumiq. Our crew builds worlds from photogrammetry of real Italian places — Rome's historic centre and the Trastevere lanes, the Venice canals and Burano facades, the Amalfi Coast and Capri cliffs, the Dolomites and Val d'Orcia ridgelines, Tuscan vineyards and Sicilian baroque towns — or designs sci-fi, period and impossible-location worlds from scratch.

Camera tracking locks parallax to the moving camera, so the wall responds correctly through dollies, jibs, Steadicam and handheld shots. Before stage day, our colour scientists match the LED panels to the cinema camera and post pipeline. Post and finishing run through Frame by Frame, a two-time David di Donatello VFX winner, alongside EDI Effetti Digitali Italiani, Square Post Production and Cinecittà Post. Our team also handles the MiC and Italian Film Commission forms that confirm forty-per-cent global tax credit eligibility under the Cinema Italian Plan. The virtual art department schedule starts in pre-production, so assets are stage-ready by day one on the volume.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LED wall virtual production?

LED wall virtual production (also called ICVFX - In-Camera Visual Effects) uses large LED displays to show real-time rendered worlds behind your actors. The camera captures both the cast and the background in-camera, which gives lifelike lighting and reflections.

What are the advantages over green screen?

LED walls light actors naturally and capture true reflections in eyes and on surfaces. They also let actors see the world they are acting in. Because the result is captured in-camera, you need far less post-prod VFX work.

What kind of environments can you create?

We can build almost any world, from real Italian places such as Rome's historic centre, Venice's canals, the Amalfi Coast, the Dolomites and Tuscan vineyards to sci-fi worlds and past eras. These worlds can come from photogrammetry of real Italian sites, or be designed from scratch in Unreal Engine by EDI or Frame by Frame.

Do you have LED stages in Italy?

Yes. Cinecittà Studios in Rome runs Europe's largest LED wall, and Studio 22 (38,000 sq ft) is purpose-built for ICVFX work. When you need a custom setup, we can also build short-term LED volumes within the wider Cinecittà complex.

How does camera tracking work?

Camera tracking systems read the camera's exact spot and rotation in real time. This lets the virtual world shift with correct parallax as the camera moves, which creates convincing changes in perspective.

What's involved in pre-production?

Virtual production needs heavy pre-production, since we build digital worlds, plan camera moves and prepare the tech. An early start gives you time to develop assets and refine creative choices.

Productions in Italy that need this often pair it with Virtual Production, AR Production, and Motion Control Filming for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Cinema Lens Kits and TV & Film Production Services.
