Gaffer & Lighting Services Italy

Pro gaffers and lighting crews skilled in LED, HMI, and tungsten \t\t\t\t\t\tsystems. We cover small interviews and large nighttime shoots across Italy.

The gaffer is the chief lighting technician. This person designs and runs the lighting plan that the director of photography sets out. Italian shoots span many settings, from Rome studios to spots across Milan and beyond. Skilled gaffers must work with shifting power setups, weather, and the gear that Italian rental houses can supply.

Our NeedAFixer network links you with skilled gaffers and grips across Italy. They slot right into your cinematography team. Our pros know studio and location lighting, rigging for tough settings, and the electrical and mechanical systems that modern shoots need. They also keep strong ties with Italian gear suppliers and rental houses.

On Location

Italian electric and grip departments built around the capo elettricista tradition

Lighting and grip departments in Italy are built around the capo elettricista hierarchy that has run out of Cinecittà for generations. A chief electrician sits at the top, with best-boy, set electricians, and rigging crew below. They all work to the CCNL Cinema Audiovisivo type that the Italian Cinema Plan and the 40% MiC tax credit require of any production claiming Italian spend.

Our gaffers and key grips come from that working pool, with proven credits across feature, drama, and high-end commercial shoots out of Cinecittà, Lumiq Studios in Turin, and the Mediaset and Sky Italia stages around Milan. On a given day they handle ARRI SkyPanel S60 and S30 banks for soft daylight, M-Series HMI heads for exterior fill, Aputure 600x and 1200d for fast setup, Mole-Richardson tungsten units for the period and warm-light work Italian features still favour, and Astera Titan tubes for tight interior practicals.

Grip and electric kit comes from the set Roman and Milanese rental houses, namely Panalight, Stop-Service, Cinegrip, and Bartolini Electric. That means dolly track, jib arms, condor work, Movi Pro sleds, and full distribution can ship as one package rather than be chased across many vendors. We set up power packs hire and city tie-ins with Sirio Service and Bartolini, and we prepare ENPALS payroll and INAIL safety forms before the first day of prep.

Riggers come up through the AIC-aligned cinematographer pipeline and the CSC tech track, so working at height under Italian safety law is handled with records, not improvisation. We scale crews honestly to the lighting plan. A single-camera interview in central Rome travels with gaffer plus best boy, while a Cinecittà night exterior or a Costa Smeralda yacht shoot is staffed with rigging electrics, balloon-light operators, and dedicated power packs ops. Global DPs sign on without translation friction, since our department heads have shipped MiC-funded features and Netflix Italian Originals to delivery in English.

We base electric and grip crews near each shooting region. Units in Rome, Milan, Turin, Florence, and Naples draw on local talent first. Crew availability is fast, and backup electricians stay ready for last-minute needs. When a shoot splits across the Dolomites and a Lazio stage in the same week, we staff each unit. The main lighting team is never thinned. Local crews arrive prepped on access, power tie-ins, and gear routes from regional rental houses. That reach trims setup and keeps your call sheet on track.

Night and exterior lighting carry their own logistics, and our crews plan for them. A night shoot across a Rome piazza needs generators, cable runs, and rigging mapped first. A remote Sardinian coastline asks the same. Our gaffers work out power loads, set safe distribution, and place HMI and LED units with care. The location stays clear for camera and the public stays safe. Power tie-ins and street permits are arranged with the city authority ahead of time. That prep keeps a night exterior safe, lit, and on time.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

The gaffer heads the electrical and lighting department and brings the DP's lighting vision to life. They design lighting setups, lead the electric crew, rig the gear, and keep power flowing safely across the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department has a Gaffer as department head, a Best Boy Electric who assists and runs crew and gear, and Electricians or Sparks who set up and run the lights. Larger shoots also add Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and gear are mostly booked apart. We can set up gear packages from Italian rental houses to round out your crew booking. Some gaffers also bring their own kit for smaller shoots.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size tracks the scale of the shoot. Small shoots may need just a gaffer, while medium ones often want a gaffer plus a best boy and 1-2 electricians. Larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers work often with global cinematographers and know the terms, techniques, and workflow they expect.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our Italian rental partners. We can also add power packs operators to crew packages for shoots that need a major power setup.
